In a recent post, I discussed how I was feeling a little lost whilst shopping for some new autumnal pieces, but to be completely honest, I feel COMPLETELY lost when it comes to my personal style.
It was during a discussion with some friends that I realised that I couldn’t describe my style. One friend has the most amazing style, she knows what she suits and she teams it up with complimentary pieces. She styles it in such a way that just gives her that urban chic street style that I love so much. My “Street Style” pinterest board is filled with inspiration from women whose style can be described as: chic, classic, effortless, rock, grungy, tomboy and eccentric. I love all of these styles, I have a wardrobe filled with pieces to recreate these looks, but I just don’t know how to label my personal style. So, I decided to find some guidance and take an online style quiz, hopefully someone else can label my sense of style.
Topshop has an amazing reputation when it comes to personal shopping and style, so when I discovered their wee style quiz, I knew that they would be able to help me out. Now, I no longer shop in Topshop as I no longer fit in to their clothes, but I have a plan.
The Style Quiz.
I clicked on the My Topshop Wardrobe link and got stuck straight in, answering the questions as honestly as I could. The style quiz started with asking my age. How. Rude. But then, next week I turn 29 and I really don’t want to look like mutton dressed like lamb. Or do I? Just kidding. I don’t. I think by starting the quiz with that question is really important because I believe that Topshop caters for all ages, it would be amazing if they would cater for all sizes – but let’s not get into that just now. The second question stopped me in my tracks and I suddenly needed a tea break, even though I had just begun.
Beyoncé is my God and I love her so much. The team of stylists she has work hard to give us that glam look that we all know and love, but I feel like her style isn’t my style. Cara Delevingne’s Laid-back tomboy look is something that I would never be able to pull off. Cara can pull on some trackie bottoms and a beanie hat and look effortlessly cool, but I would look like a tramp. Simple.
I was torn between Alexa, Kate and Florence. Kate Moss is known for her leather jackets, leopard print and skinny jeans – all three of the elements is something that I enjoy too. Her style is just far too cool for me to try and replicate. With Florence, I love her confidence when it comes to clashing colours and prints, plus that ultimate boho vibe, but if I am honest, I just don’t think I could pull that off everyday. I went back to my pinterest board and scrolled through and I noticed that Alexa Chung pops up a lot. I don’t think that Beyoncé is on there at all, neither is Cara or Florence. Kate makes an appearance every now and then – but that is mostly because of her band tees. So that made the decision a little easier. Alexa was the style icon I love the most. Sorry girls, I mean to offence to any of you, you all have amazing style, but it is not right for me.
Defining My Style.
After choosing a style icon to take inspiration from, the quiz got a little deeper. I decided not to overthink anything and just go with my gut instinct when answering these questions. If I overthink, I will start to change my mind and double guess myself. But I guess we all do that.
I decided to play it a little safe and choose neutral for the adventurous question. Before, I think I would of picked “Out There” because if I am honest, I use to try to hard and had too many disastrous fashion incidents. For what words best describe my style, I clicked on a coupe that I believe are accurate and a couple that I wanted to try and achieve: Grungy, Eccentric, Effortless, Classic and Statement. I feel like these might clash a little, but I was curious as to what Topshop would create for me.
The next series of questions asked things like:
Then I was asked to select which styles I like for weekdays, weekends and nights out. The ones that I chose have the wee green heart. For the weekday options, I love the mix of classic pieces like the beautiful long line trench coat, the pleated skirt and I am a sucker for blue jeans with white sneakers.
For my weekend options, I was torn. I like the look of 4 of the styles but the style quiz only allows you to select 2. So, I decided to go for the “Edgy and fashion-Forward” option along with “Retro and Preppy”. That wee mustard fluffy jacket is just everything and I do love a good check print. I did gravitate towards the “Urban and Cool” style, but I want to step away from ripped jeans a little. I also loved the look of the “Laid-back and Chic” look too. But like I said before, when I try to look laid-back, I look like I haven’t made any effort at all – and not in that cool effortless chic way either.
The hardest choices were for the night out option. I do love to dress up for a night out and look trendy – god, I hate describing myself as that – so I went for the fashion-forward option again along with “Smart and Directional” because I love a good tailored trousers and blazers have been creeping in to my heart for a while now.
After this, I was asked a few more questions just to help the style quiz find the perfect pieces that will go along with the style that I want.
After submitting all of these answers, the next step was to find out what my style is.
The Results of My Style Quiz.
“The FASHION Girl” – okay, I can accept that. I think that this title best fits my style as it covers pretty much everything I do when it comes to fashion. I do love shopping for the new season essentials and pieces that make a big statement. So perhaps me feeling lost when it comes to my own style is actually a good thing because it means that I don’t have to stick to one certain style. The pieces that Topshop picked for me were actually amazing. There were only a handful of things that didn’t appeal to me. But there were plenty that did.
One day I can be that cool-girl chic mixed with retro pieces, and then the next day I can rock fashion-forward pieces. The choices are endless for me. Perhaps one day, I will revisit this quiz and see what changes. Now. The biggest task I have is making room in my wardrobe for all of these new pieces because your girl here needs a lot of these in her new wardrobe.
How would you describe YOUR style?
