I am an adult who still has temper tantrums when it comes to getting dressed. Like most people, I go through phases of "I have NOTHING to wear!" - when I have a wardrobe full of clothes in front of me.
Or I cannot find the garment that I need to wear that day, throwing a mini rage like Cher in Clueless when she can't find her "white collarless shirt from FRED SEGAL!! It’s my most capable looking outfit!" Because of these outbursts, I decided one day to sort out this issue. Which, in all fairness, isn’t really an issue. But it is. To me.
Grab & Go
There are quite a few looks in my wardrobe that I just love and I know that when I put them on, I don’t have to check that it looks “alright” in the mirror again. For the sixth time that morning. With those looks, I like to hang them on hangers and have them pulled together at the front of my wardrobe.
So, that blouse that you think only looks great with those jeans – hang them on the same hanger so when you are in a rush, you can just grab and go.
I have a skirt that only goes with 3 tops in my wardrobe. So when I fold them up to store them. I place them on top of the skirt, so when I reach for that particular skirt, I know that the tops are the right match.
When my wardrobe starts to feel a little boring, I use Instagram or LOOKBOOK for outfit inspiration. I have several pieces that I wear a certain way, but because I did a little style stalking via social media, I now feel more comfortable mixing things up a little.
I love clashing colours and prints together. Or wearing smart daywear dresses with ripped jeans. Layering jumpers under spaghetti strap dresses or blouses. Just trying to spark something new in my wardrobe without adding something new.
STYLING THE LOOK
If I fall in love with a certain piece but I don’t think I have anything in my wardrobe that would compliment it, then I don’t pick it up and take it to the register. If I cannot stop thinking about that particular piece, then I take it as a sign that it must be mine. But I will not take it unless I know it can create an outfit by using something I already have in my wardrobe.
I only do this because I used to be extremely impulsive about shopping for clothes. I used to grab something because it was nice and in my size, then I wouldn’t wear it much because I didn’t have anything to wear with it. So I would either keep shopping to find something to go with it, or I would never wear it and leave it at the bottom of my wardrobe until I feel the wash of guilt from wasting money and then I would donate it to charity.
As I grew up and got a better understanding on the fashion industry and consumerism, I realised that I was contributing to one of the many problems by being so wasteful. So now I take the time to buy items, and plan out several outfits for that particular piece.
