8 LESSONS MY MUM TAUGHT ME

As a baby, she did everything for you. As a child, she taught you everything. As a teen, she looked out for you and tried to be your friend - but was such an embarrassment. At the end of the day, she is still your mum.
Growing up, I had what I thought was a normal relationship with my mum. She loved me, cared for me and would always protect me. She taught me to be kind and considerate, but there were some other lessons that I still live by.

No. 1 Never Wash Your Face With Soap - My mum had very sensitive skin, even the thought of changing washing powder gave her a wee panic. From a small age, I remember her telling me that you should never wash your face with soap. For the love of me, I cannot remember her reasoning behind this, but I have never washed my face with soap. As a child, I used water and a face cloth. As a teen, a Johnston’s baby wipe was the chosen product. But as a young woman, I have a skincare routine that I am proud of and it still does not involve soap - just other lotions and potions.

No. 2 Never Shave Above The Knee - I have wrote about this topic before and I love sharing this story with others. When my mum was younger, she had the most amazing legs. Long, thin and naturally toned. I inherited the long and [slightly] thin legs but I need to work on the toning. When I was ready to shave my legs, my mum told me never to shave above the knee as there was no point. To this day, I have never done this and I have no hairs on my upper hand of my legs. Great tip from mum.

No. 3 When It Comes To Earrings, The Bigger The Better - Do I need to say much more on this lesson? No. It’s true.

No. 4 Don’t Spend What You Don’t Have - My mum has never owned a credit card. Never taken out a loan. Never borrowed a penny. My mum has always believed that you should not spend money you do not have. She was fantastic at budgeting but this is one lesson that I am struggling with. I love to shop.

No. 5 Dance Like No One Is Watching - My mum has one of the biggest personalities I have ever met. She doesn’t care what people think of her ands has never bad mouthed anyone. Because of her positive attitude and love for other people, my mum made many life long friends. When we would dance to 70s Disco or Classic 80s hits in the kitchen, we would have such a laugh. Even when in public, if one of her favourite songs were playing in a shop, she would sing and dance along with it and just cackle away. I just love that.

No. 6 Don’t Hide Your Laughter - Leading on from the previous lesson, laughter is key. The bigger, the better. I like to think of myself as funny and I laugh a lot. At the most inappropriate times too. My mums laughter was big and soulful and then out of nowhere this awkward hissing mixed with a cackle would come along. As I am getting older, I think I have adopted this witch like laughter too. When that is triggered, I automatically stop laughing. Denying the fact I have inherited my mums laugh. But then that just makes me laugh even more.

No. 7 No Matter What Happens. Smile. If you can’t, then remember…

No. 8 That’s Life - You will get through what ever life throws at you. Just make sure you are happy whilst living it.
