Back in 2008 I was browsing online, researching for a project I was doing for college when I stumbled across something I have never seen before. A Blog…
Straight away, I was obsessed. I loved the fact there was someone else in the world, that was interested in the same things as me and they were brave enough to publish their opinions all over the internet. Then I started to discover more and more and fell in to a black hole of blogging. I started to think that I too wanted to share my opinions, to see if there were others that had the same thoughts about fashion and makeup. So, I began to research in to how to start a blog and after a week or so, my blog was born. But it wasn’t The Lipstick Daily, oh no. It was christened something that I thought was cool, but then I was too embarrassed to tell people about it.
My first blog was called ‘Style Princess Diaries’. I do NOT recall why I named it that, but I think it’s because ‘Style Diaries’ was already taken and I just thought that by adding a random word in the middle it will be okay. I mean, it is just a bit juvenile and if anything, I am most definitely a mother-fucking Queen!
I blogged on and off for a number of years and then I just kind of lost myself. I didn’t have the same motivation and I just felt like I was writing posts for the sake of publishing something for the Universe to read. Whilst at art school, I started to write again but felt like I had outgrown the ‘Style Princess Diaries’, so I wanted to rebrand my Blog but I wanted to take my time and not rush it like I did the first time around.
I wanted a nice punchy name that wasn’t cheesy and that was nothing like the original name. This process took some time. I wrote down so many words related to my interests and nothing clicked, it wasn’t until I was having a conversation with a colleague at work about it that I finally stumbled across the name that I would use for my blog. The conversation went a little like:
Her: “Have you got a new name for your blog yet?”
Me: “No. Not yet. Nothing seems to feel right.”
Her: “Well, what do you love?”
Me: “Ummmm…. fashion, food, makeup, lipstick in particular.”
Her: “Why lipstick?”
Me: “No idea really. Probably because you can just put on some lipstick and go. You don’t need to do anything else with your face. I wear lipstick daily…wait…that’s it…The Lipstick Daily!
Her: “It sounds like a beauty newspaper.”
Me: “Perrrrrrrfect. Now, pass me that mannequins arm.”
So, armed with my new blog name I created The Lipstick Daily and I have never looked back.
I felt determined to create a space where I can be open about my thoughts and feelings about fashion and beauty. Then that lead to me talking more about life issues and food. I just talk about anything and I wrote my posts exactly how I would talk. Actually, for a while I wrote in a very professional manner. I wanted my blog to be notice ed by someone. Anyone. Never swearing, overthinking my sentence structure and making sure it looked spot on. But I started to switch off a bit because yet again, I was losing myself.
Any time I didn’t post for a while I would apologise in my next blog post and beg for forgiveness from my readers. But I would just bash out paragraphs on my laptop to create a post that I felt “meh” about and hit that publish button, just so there was something. ANYTHING.
Now I write when I want, what I want and how I god damn please. Because this is MY corner of the internet and I love it here. You are always welcome to pull up a chair and join me anytime.
