A wee while ago, I wrote about my Evening Skincare Routine and as time has passed my skin has changed along with my routine.
Before I really concentrated on cleansing my skin every night, using oils and masks to help my skin stay firm and hydrated. I have realised in the last couple of months, my skin looks and feels so much better and I don’t think that it is just due to my evening skincare routine. I believe that it is my morning routine that is having the biggest effect – in the best kind of way.
Every morning, without fail I wash my face with lukewarm water and a muslin cloth, using a light cleanser. I love using a water mist or a lotion all over my face and neck to help sooth and hydrate my skin, followed by a super lightweight moisturiser to help lock in moisture for the day ahead. The only time that this little routine might change is when my skin is feeling a little tight and I use a quick facemask that only takes a couple of minutes to do its thing. The most important thing that I have done for my skin is, I am drinking a lot more water. This has improved everything.
The cleansers that I swear by at the moment is the Galacticleanse Jelly Cleanser from GlamGlow – it smells like chocolate orange, melts away quickly and it leaves the skin feeling soft. This is perfect in the mornings as it is so quick. If I feel like my skin needs a deeper cleanse then I turn to MAC Cosmetics and their Lightful C + Coral Grass range. They have the most amazing cleanser that smells heavenly and lathers up on the skin beautifully. When I use this cleanser, it is normally because I want to pamper myself a little and spend time massaging it in and slowly removing it with a hot damp flannel. This cleanser refreshes, hydrates and really brightens the skin. I believe that the Coral Grass is an extract from seaweed, a natural collagen, so the skin looks and feels plump. It. Is. Beautiful.
For the water mist, I have tried a few different thermal water sprays that I have enjoyed, but lately I have been using Fix+ Spray. A lot of people only use it as a fixing spray at the end of their makeup application, but it is a hydrating mist so it is beautiful on the skin before any makeup application. It soaks right in to the skin and gives it an instant refresh. If my skin is ever sore, or red for any reason then I turn back to that Lightful C range and use the softening lotion. Now, if you haven’t heard of this product, then you need to try it out for yourself.
It is a hydrating lotion in a spray form and it can be used to clarify and condition your skin, making it extremely soft. It actually prepares your skin for any other skincare products that you are going to use too, giving you the maximum benefits you can. The Vitamin C in this helps even out your skin tone, so any redness in your skin will fade over time. I swear by this. Sometimes, I use it at night after I have removed my makeup to sooth my skin after using makeup remover.
Before, I use to use thick, heavy creams to help hydrate my skin. Then I was tackling with shiny skin and patchy makeup just a few hours later. I decided to switch to this moisturiser and things changed pretty quickly. This moisturiser melts in to the skin so quickly that you are not left with that greasy shiny feeling that other moisturisers can give you. I personally have found that the oils in my skin are more under control with this product too. This skincare product makes the skin feel suppler and appear more luminous. So when I use all of these products on a daily basis, my skin looks glowy and feels amazing.
It is when I run out of a product, then the game changes. I recently ran out of the moisturiser and it felt like my skin missed it. A lot. I know that may seem a little strange, but my makeup wasn’t sitting right, my skin felt tight and dry patches started to appear – especially around the corners of my mouth and nose.
For when I get those sore dry patches, I reach for something that I have been using since I was a child – E45. Now, I know that I am not alone in this. Surly, we have all used E45 at some point in our life. If not, then you need to try some. This product is amazing when you skin needs super strength products to recover your skin. It is handy to have around because you can use it all over your body. So, it is perfect for those winter months.
For the corners of my mouth, where the skin was tight, redraw and dry, I really struggled to find something that works. But, a colleague of mine suggested coconut oil. I got my hands on a tiny sachet of Vita Coco Coconut Oil and I have been applying it in those areas and by GOD it has saved my skin. The tightness has disappeared, the redness has reduced and the dryness is less. I was a bit sceptical to use coconut oil as I have intolerance to it when I consume it, but I have had no side effects since using this.
Now. I have raved about this face mask so much to my friends and all over my social media. I love this facemask so much; I believe that I am on like the 4th tube of it. It is a skin-nourishing mask and it blows my mind. I just apply it all over, rub it in and rinse it off a few minutes later. I try not to use this so much as I don’t think I need it all the time. But I love to use this occasionally in the morning when my skin needs a little pick-me-up. Other than that, I love to use it after hot baths or showers, or whenever my skin feels tight and I want to really pamper myself.
Like I said at the beginning, the most important thing you can do for your skin is to drink more water. I have talked to different people who have dry skin and they will just apply lotions and potions to try to fix it all, but then they confess that they don’t drink any water. Like. Any. Your skin needs water to flush out toxins and keep your whole body hydrated, not just your face.
So, if you have dry skin and are looking for some advice, start with a large glass of water every morning along with your normal skincare routine, and let’s see if that helps. You might be surprised.
