When it comes to having a lust list, mine never seems to end.
From a young age, there has always been things I want because someone else had them. The earliest thing I can remember is TY Beanies. Yes. Beanie Babies were all the rage when I was younger and my best friend had a collection of them. I was in awe over this beautiful collection of brightly coloured creatures that were organised perfectly on shelves that decorated her room. I went home and told my mum that she had to take me to the toy store at the weekend so that I can spend my pocket money on a Beanie Baby. Every week, I would buy a new one to add to my growing collection.
As a pre-teen, I became obsessed with stationary. I don’t know why, but I did. I remember a girl in my class had a pink Groovy Chic pencil case - I wanted one. So I bought a purple one. Then someone had a cool green gel pen. So I bought a pack of fruit scented glitter gel pens.
As a teenager, my best friend got a bright pink bomber jacket with a fur trimmed hood. It was so cool. We were both in to the skateboarding phase - well, the fashion side of it more than the actual sporting side of it - so this jacket was perfect. I wanted one just like it. Everyday I would drop hints to my mum and I would not shut up about it. A couple of weeks later, my mum returned from a day of shopping and she was so excited to show me my new jacket. She pulled out the EXACT SAME JACKET. I lost the plot and started shouting at my mum. I couldn't have the exact same one as my best friend. How stupid would we look? My friend will probably hate me. My mum got so fed up with me that she made me wear it to school the next day. My friend was not impressed. I made my mum return it and I don’t think my friend wore it so much after that. I felt so bad.
So to some I may be a bit of a copy cat, but to me I am a marketers dream. If you advertise something and make it seem cool - I will want it. As a teenager and in to my early twenties, I would find anyway to get my hands on it. Save up all my cash, bang on about it to my mum or add it to every Christmas or Birthday wish list. I would get it. Now, at this age, I have a little more control. If I want something, I think about it more. I don’t tend to rush to make a purchase unless I get that feeling. You know the one. The one where you know you will instantly regret it as soon as you leave the store. I love that feeling. Although, my bank account doesn’t.
What have you purchased because someone else had it? Are you easily influenced?
